C Vijayakumar (CVK or Vijay) is the CEO and Managing Director of HCLTech, a US$ 11.79 billion global technology firm. C Vijayakumar was born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India on October 13, 1967. He went to ‘The Lawrence School’ in Lovedale, Ooty for his education. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from P.S.G. College of Technology in Tamil Nadu, India, and now lives in New Jersey with his wife Vanitha and daughter Divya.
Early in his career, his interest in Digital Signal Processing, which began in college, led him to join C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) in Bangalore as an R&D engineer. He worked there for a few years as part of a team focused on developing indigenous satellite communication technology.
As a senior technical engineer, Vijayakumar joined HCLTech in 1994 as a software engineer in the founding startup team of Comnet. In July 2016, he was named the company’s chief operating officer. He has held several positions of leadership at HCL, including Chief Operating Officer, President of the Infrastructure Services Division, and Head of the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance business unit.
HCL has undergone a significant transformation under Vijayakumar’s leadership, transitioning from a traditional IT services company to a leading provider of technology solutions. He has prioritized developing capabilities in emerging technologies such as digital, cloud, and cyber security, and has invested heavily in R&D and innovation.
One of Vijayakumar’s most notable accomplishments at HCL was the $1.8 billion acquisition of several companies, including Geometric, Butler America Aerospace, and IBM’s software products. He has also led the company’s efforts to expand into new markets, such as Europe and Asia.
Vijay’s personal leadership on this journey has been recognized across the industry, with Business Today naming him the ‘Best CEO of the Year, 2020’ in the IT/ITES industry. Previously, he was named one of the “Top 10 Disruptive CEOs” by industry analyst firm HfS.
