January 16, 2025, marks the ninth anniversary of the Startup India initiative, launched in 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote entrepreneurship and innovation across the nation. Over these nine years, India has grown into the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, with over 1.59 lakh DPIIT-recognized startups.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi shared a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter):
“Today, we mark #9YearsOfStartupIndia, a landmark initiative that has redefined innovation, entrepreneurship, and growth. This is a programme very close to my heart, as it has emerged as a powerful way of furthering youth empowerment. Over the past nine years, this transformative program has empowered countless youngsters, turning their innovative ideas into successful StartUps.”

Key Milestones Over Nine Years

  • Startup Recognition: DPIIT-recognized startups have surged from 500 in 2016 to 1,59,157 in 2025.
  • Unicorn Growth: India now boasts 118 unicorns with a collective valuation of over $354 billion, compared to just 8 unicorns in 2015.
  • Employment Generation: Startups have created more than 17 lakh jobs nationwide.
  • Women Entrepreneurs: Nearly 48% of startups feature at least one woman director, reflecting the growing role of women in entrepreneurship.

Startups have extended beyond major cities like Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai. Over 50% now emerge from tier-2 and tier-3 cities such as Jaipur, Surat, Indore, and Coimbatore. This trend underscores the rising entrepreneurial talent in smaller towns, further strengthened by initiatives like Telangana’s T-Hub and access to affordable talent pools.

Government Support Driving Success

The success of the Startup India initiative is backed by robust government policies and programs:

  • Startup Policies: Dedicated policies in 31 states and union territories, compared to just 4 in 2016.
  • Ease of Doing Business: Measures such as streamlining regulations, eliminating angel taxes, and reducing compliance burdens have enhanced the startup ecosystem.
  • Government e-Marketplace (GeM): Over 27,000 startups listed on GeM have fulfilled 3.53 lakh orders worth ₹30,825 crore by October 2024.

Driving Innovation and Global Recognition

Indian startups have delivered impactful solutions across industries like fintech, edtech, health-tech, and e-commerce, solving local challenges while gaining global recognition.

Companies such as Zomato, Nykaa, and Ola highlight the shift from job seekers to job creators, driving the nation’s economic progress.

As India celebrates National Startup Day, the achievements of the past nine years serve as a strong foundation for an even brighter future in innovation and entrepreneurship.
