Bengaluru, March 2, 2024 (Source: Deccan Herald) – The tranquil atmosphere of the bustling Brookefield area in Whitefield, Bengaluru, was shattered on Friday, March 1, when a low-intensity blast rocked the popular eatery joint, The Rameshwaram Cafe. The explosion, triggered by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), left 10 individuals injured, including customers and staff, sending shockwaves through the IT hub.

At approximately 1:06 pm, during peak hours with nearly 30 to 35 customers in attendance, the IED, equipped with a timer, detonated inside the cafe premises. Investigators discovered remnants of a 9v battery, a timer, and various nuts and bolts strewn across the scene of the incident, indicating a premeditated act.

Authorities responded swiftly to the emergency, with Fire and Emergency personnel and police investigators rushing to the scene. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, addressing the media, disclosed that the suspect, a man aged between 30 and 35 years, had placed the explosive-laden bag near a tree next to the kitchen sink after ordering a meal. The explosion occurred precisely one hour later, causing minimal damage but igniting widespread panic.

Following a detailed examination of CCTV footage, the suspect’s movements, including his arrival via bus, were meticulously documented. Deputy CM Shivakumar reassured the public, stating, “Eight to nine teams have been formed, and the probe is being led by the Central Crime Branch (CCB). There is no need to panic.”

Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed ongoing investigations, including scrutiny of BMTC bus footage, while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pledged decisive action against the perpetrators.

Divya Raghavendra, Founder and MD of Rameshwaram Cafe, emphasized full cooperation with law enforcement, stating, “Our concern is for the safety of the injured. We are supporting the investigations.”

A case has been registered at the HAL police station under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Explosive Substances Act, marking the severity of the incident.

In a significant development, CCTV footage emerged depicting the suspect donning a cap, glasses, and a mask approximately an hour before the blast. Efforts to identify the individual, who had partially obscured his face, intensified as he was seen entering the cafe, consuming a snack, and subsequently departing. The explosive device, concealed within a tiffin box bag left near the hand-wash area, emerged as the focal point of the investigation.

The incident swiftly became embroiled in a political imbroglio, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Congress exchanging barbs. While BJP leaders held the Congress government accountable, the Congress retorted, accusing the BJP of politicizing a tragic occurrence.
