Amaravati to Get India’s First Dedicated Quantum and AI University Campus

Amaravati to Get India’s First Dedicated Quantum and AI University Campus

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved the establishment of India’s first dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence University campus in Amaravati, with a proposed investment of ₹730.70 crore over five years.

The campus will be developed by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. NIELIT is a deemed-to-be university, and the Amaravati facility will operate as a specialised campus within its university framework, focused on quantum technologies, AI and other emerging deep-tech areas.

The project will come up on an 8.5-acre site and is proposed to be fully funded through a Government of India grant-in-aid from MeitY. The approval was given at a meeting of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) chaired by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The project follows an MoU signed between NIELIT and the Andhra Pradesh government in February 2026 at the India AI Impact Summit to establish the dedicated Quantum and AI campus in Amaravati.

The campus will combine higher education, research, advanced technology skilling, innovation and entrepreneurship, with programmes covering quantum computing and algorithms, quantum communication and security, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, semiconductor fabrication, chip design, VLSI, assembly, testing and packaging, embedded systems and high-performance computing.

Academic and advanced technology skill-development programmes are expected to begin from September 2026 at a temporary facility at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur, while the permanent Amaravati campus is developed. The campus is planned to offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma and executive programmes.

A key part of the project will be a Quantum Research, Innovation and Incubation Block spanning around 1.2–1.25 lakh sq ft. It is planned to house infrastructure for quantum computing and communication, quantum photonics, quantum security, cryogenic systems, high-performance computing, cleanrooms, nano-fabrication, semiconductor technologies, chip design, data centres and startup incubation.

The university is expected to train around 8,250 learners during its first five years, including approximately 1,650 students through degree programmes and 6,600 through skilling and certification programmes. Annual intake is expected to rise as the campus expands.

NIELIT has proposed collaborations with institutions including IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University and JNTU institutions for academic programmes, research and technology development.

The permanent campus is also planned to include smart classrooms, laboratories, hostels and a 500-bed residential facility, along with infrastructure such as solar power generation, solar water heating, energy-efficient utilities, EV charging and scientific waste-management systems.

The university is part of Andhra Pradesh’s broader effort to position Amaravati as a hub for quantum computing and deep-tech innovation through the proposed Amaravati Quantum Valley ecosystem. The state has already established quantum-computing infrastructure, including the Amaravati 1Q and Amaravati 1S testbeds, which were launched in April 2026 as open-access facilities for quantum technology research and testing.

The Amaravati Quantum Valley initiative has also been linked with plans to host an IBM 133-qubit quantum computer and build partnerships across industry and academia, as Andhra Pradesh seeks to position Amaravati among the world’s leading quantum hubs.

The university project aligns with national initiatives including the National Quantum Mission, IndiaAI Mission and India Semiconductor Mission, bringing education, research, semiconductor technologies, AI and quantum computing under a single specialised campus.
