Alteon Raises $2.5 Mn Funding From Lachy Groom
Alteon plans to use the new capital to expand its research and development programme and conduct further offshore testing.

Aerospace deep-tech startup Alteon has secured $2.5 million in pre-seed capital, with investor Lachy Groom leading the round and Together Fund also participating.
The company is developing autonomous aircraft designed for exceptionally long-duration missions, with the potential to stay airborne for several months and, eventually, beyond a year.
Alteon plans to use the new capital to expand its research and development programme and conduct further offshore testing aimed at demonstrating autonomous dynamic soaring without continuous propulsion. The longer-term objective is to deploy fleets of such aircraft over the ocean.
Founded by Samay Sanghvi, Alteon is developing small fixed-wing autonomous aircraft that use dynamic soaring to extract energy from wind gradients. The technique is inspired by birds such as albatrosses, which use differences in wind speed at different altitudes to gain energy while flying over long distances.
The latest funding follows a significant flight-test milestone for the Bengaluru-based startup. Alteon’s aircraft recently demonstrated autonomous flight within one metre of the surface of the Bay of Bengal, completing multiple consecutive loops at more than 62 mph. The test was designed to validate a critical part of the manoeuvre required for the company’s long-term dynamic-soaring strategy.
However, the company has not yet demonstrated sustained, propulsion-free flight using harvested wind energy. Its current tests are focused on proving the autonomous flight and low-altitude control required before attempting the more difficult task of extracting enough energy from wind gradients to sustain flight.
The company’s aircraft are designed around a flight pattern in which the vehicle moves between layers of air travelling at different speeds. By repeatedly crossing these wind gradients, the aircraft can potentially gain energy and extend its endurance substantially beyond what would be possible using only onboard batteries or fuel.
Alteon’s longer-term goal is to develop an aircraft capable of remaining airborne for more than a year, with the company publicly citing an endurance target of around 417 days. This remains a target rather than a demonstrated flight capability.
The startup intends to initially focus on persistent maritime surveillance, where long-endurance aircraft could provide continuous monitoring of large ocean areas. Potential applications include tracking vessels and fishing activity, monitoring offshore infrastructure and supporting weather and ocean observation.
The company believes such aircraft could offer a lower-cost alternative for persistent monitoring compared with relying solely on ships, conventional aircraft or satellite systems. The commercial and operational economics, however, will depend on whether Alteon can demonstrate reliable long-duration autonomous flight in real-world ocean conditions.
Sanghvi, who is 20 years old, began working on the technology before formally establishing Alteon. The company has since built a specialised aerospace engineering operation in Bengaluru and has been conducting rapid cycles of prototype development and flight testing.
Alteon has also been developing a system in which its propulsion hardware can potentially operate as turbines, allowing the aircraft to convert wind energy into electricity and recharge onboard batteries. The company is seeking to combine this energy harvesting with dynamic soaring to extend endurance further.
The startup has said its aircraft could eventually carry payloads for applications spanning maritime security, environmental monitoring, infrastructure surveillance, scientific research and search and rescue.
