Startup India Launches E.ON Future Makers Challenge for Energy-Tech Innovators
Selected participants will receive grant funding for up to four winning teams, along with technical mentorship from experts at E.ON, Infosys, and IIT Madras.
Global energy company E.ON, in partnership with Infosys, IIT Madras, Startup India, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has launched the E.ON Future Makers Challenge, a nationwide innovation programme aimed at developing next-generation technologies for Europe’s evolving energy infrastructure.
The challenge invites Indian startups, researchers, students, and innovators to develop solutions that address critical challenges across modern power systems using technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, cybersecurity, digital engineering, and smart energy management. Applications are now open through the Startup India platform.
The programme focuses on four strategic innovation themes: Grid Resilience & Physical Protection, IT Security for Critical Infrastructure, Robotics & AI for Grid Vigilance and Workforce Safety, and the Smart Meter of the Future. These focus areas are intended to improve the reliability, security, automation, and efficiency of electricity networks while supporting the ongoing digital transformation of energy infrastructure.
Selected participants will receive grant funding for up to four winning teams, along with technical mentorship from experts at E.ON, Infosys, and IIT Madras. Participants will also gain access to IIT Madras’ research laboratories and testing facilities, while Infosys will support product development and potential enterprise validation through its global technology ecosystem. The programme is designed to help innovators move beyond proof-of-concept by enabling real-world pilot deployments and commercialisation opportunities.
Unlike traditional startup competitions, the E.ON Future Makers Challenge is centred on solving live industrial problems faced by one of Europe’s largest energy companies. Successful solutions could be evaluated for deployment across E.ON’s energy infrastructure, providing Indian innovators with exposure to international markets and enterprise-scale use cases.

For Infosys, the collaboration strengthens its growing focus on engineering services, sustainability, industrial AI, and digital transformation, while IIT Madras brings deep expertise in energy systems, robotics, AI, and advanced research. The initiative also aligns with Startup India’s objective of connecting Indian startups with global corporations to solve real-world industry challenges and expand their access to international markets.
The launch comes at a time when energy utilities worldwide are increasingly adopting AI, robotics, and intelligent automation to strengthen grid resilience against cyber threats, improve operational efficiency, and support the integration of renewable energy sources.
