Flipkart to Launch Food Delivery Service, Set to Challenge Zomato and Swiggy
The service is likely to debut in Bengaluru before expanding to other cities.

Walmart-owned Flipkart is set to enter India’s online food delivery market in the coming weeks, taking on established players such as Zomato, Swiggy, and emerging competitors including Rapido. The company is expected to begin with a pilot rollout before expanding the service based on customer feedback and operational performance.
Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy confirmed the company’s plans during Walmart’s recent earnings call, stating that food delivery will be introduced as another service within Flipkart’s growing consumer ecosystem. The offering is expected to be integrated into the main Flipkart app, although reports suggest the company has also been testing a standalone food delivery application internally.
According to reports, Flipkart’s food delivery service will leverage the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), enabling restaurants to receive orders through the government-backed open commerce network. By integrating with ONDC, the company is expected to offer restaurants lower commission costs than traditional food delivery platforms while providing customers with a wider selection of merchants.
The service is likely to debut in Bengaluru before expanding to other cities. Flipkart already operates one of India’s largest e-commerce and logistics networks, and the company is expected to utilise this infrastructure to support its food delivery operations.
The move aligns with Flipkart’s broader strategy of building a diversified digital ecosystem spanning e-commerce, fashion through Myntra, travel via Cleartrip, fintech through super.money, health services through Flipkart Health+, and quick commerce through Flipkart Minutes. Food delivery represents another high-frequency consumer category that could increase user engagement and encourage customers to spend more time within the Flipkart ecosystem.
Flipkart’s entry comes at a time of increasing competition in India’s food delivery sector. While Zomato and Swiggy continue to dominate the market, newer entrants are experimenting with alternative business models. Rapido recently launched its zero-commission food delivery platform Ownly, while Swiggy introduced Toing, a value-focused offering aimed at price-conscious consumers.
India’s online food delivery market is estimated to be worth over $8 billion and continues to expand, driven by rising digital adoption, urbanisation, and increasing demand for convenience.
