Bharat Taxi Plans Expansion to 500 Cities Across India Within 2 Years

Government-backed cooperative ride-hailing platform Bharat Taxi plans to expand its services to more than 500 cities and towns across India over the next two years, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah announced during the launch of the platform’s services in 14 cities across Gujarat.

The expansion will include two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler taxis, with the platform aiming to establish a stronger presence in major urban centres before expanding into smaller towns and cities. According to Shah, Bharat Taxi has already built a network of more than 7 lakh drivers.

Speaking at the launch event in Gandhinagar, Amit Shah highlighted the platform’s driver-owned cooperative model, stating that it aims to provide better economic opportunities for drivers through lower commissions, access to financial support, insurance benefits, and other welfare initiatives.

The union minister also criticized existing private ride-hailing platforms, alleging that high commissions, payment delays, and unilateral suspension practices have created challenges for drivers. He said Bharat Taxi aims to offer an alternative model where drivers have greater participation and ownership in the platform’s operations.

Launched as India’s first cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission model, allowing drivers to retain their earnings without paying traditional aggregator commissions. The platform currently has a presence in cities including Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, and Mumbai.

The initiative is being positioned as part of the government’s broader push to strengthen the cooperative economy and create technology-enabled platforms owned and operated by their participants.
