The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has cast a long shadow over the region’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

On April 22, 2025, militants opened fire on a group of tourists in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese citizen, and injuring 17 others . This tragic event, claimed by the militant group “Kashmir Resistance,” marks the deadliest civilian attack in the region since the 2008 Mumbai attacks .

The attack has severely impacted Kashmir’s tourism industry, which had been experiencing a resurgence in recent years. The region, known for its scenic beauty and cultural heritage, had seen a significant increase in tourist arrivals, contributing substantially to the local economy.

However, the recent violence has led to mass cancellations of bookings, with many tourists cutting short their visits and others reconsidering future travel plans to the area.

Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, are facing immediate financial strain due to the sudden drop in tourism.

Many had taken loans to expand their operations in anticipation of a booming tourist season. With the abrupt decline in visitors, these businesses are now struggling to meet their financial obligations, leading to concerns about potential defaults and long-term economic repercussions for the region.

The hospitality sector, in particular, is reeling from the impact. Hotels and guesthouses, which were operating at near-full capacity, are now witnessing a surge in cancellations.

The sudden downturn threatens not only the livelihoods of those directly employed in the sector but also the broader supply chain, including local artisans, transport providers, and food suppliers, who depend on tourism for their income.

This incident underscores the fragile nature of peace and economic stability in regions susceptible to terrorism. The long-term effects on Kashmir’s tourism and hospitality sectors will depend on the effectiveness of security measures, the restoration of traveler confidence, and the resilience of local businesses in adapting to the new challenges posed by such unforeseen events.
