Tesla Inc., the electric vehicle (EV) giant led by Elon Musk, has intensified its push into the Indian market with a recruitment drive and the finalization of showroom locations in two major cities.

The company has reportedly secured sites for showrooms in Delhi’s Aerocity and Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), each spanning approximately 5,000 square feet. These showrooms will focus solely on selling imported Tesla vehicles, without providing servicing facilities.

Simultaneously, Tesla has begun hiring in India, posting 13 job openings on its official website for roles in sales, operations, customer service, and business support.

Of these, five positions are spread across Mumbai and Delhi, while the remaining roles are concentrated in Mumbai. A listing for a Customer Engagement Manager has also been published on LinkedIn.

These developments follow Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his U.S. visit. Modi later shared on social media platform X that their discussion covered topics such as technology, mobility, innovation, and space.

Tesla’s recent moves build upon its earlier groundwork in India. In 2023, the company leased a 5,850 sq. ft. office space in Pune from Tablespace Technologies.

It had also explored showroom locations with real estate giant DLF, considering sites like DLF Avenue Mall in Delhi and Gurugram’s Cyber Hub.

Tesla’s India entry had previously faced hurdles due to steep import duties. However, in March 2024, the Indian government reduced customs duties on electric vehicles priced over $40,000 from 110% to 70%, provided manufacturers commit to setting up local production facilities.

With India’s EV sector rapidly expanding, Tesla is set to compete with domestic and international players such as Tata Motors, Mahindra, MG Motor, Hyundai, and China’s BYD.

Globally, Tesla’s lineup includes the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, the recently launched Cybertruck, and the Tesla Semi. The company also offers energy solutions like Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack, alongside its solar products.
