From operating a juice and tire shop in Chhattisgarh’s Bhilai, Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, the brains behind the Mahadev Betting App, embarked on an extraordinary journey that led them to build an empire in the world of illegal betting.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) now suspects that the Mahadev betting app promoters have amassed an astounding Rs 5,000 crore, marking a colossal financial scandal. This gripping saga has taken an even more sensational twist as the ED has summoned top Bollywood celebrities, including Ranbir Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Hina Khan, and comedian Kapil Sharma, for questioning in connection with the case.

The Mahadev Online Booking App is a downloadable mobile application that offers a platform for illegal betting on virtual games such as poker, teen patti, and cricket. To access the app’s services, users must acquire a user ID and password, often sold at exorbitant prices, usually held by individuals affiliated with the app. Once inside, users can engage in online betting activities, with all financial transactions funneled through bank accounts or online channels.

While the app commenced operations in 2017, it witnessed a meteoric rise during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 when lockdowns kept people indoors. The app’s operation is overseen by “panel owners” who manage multiple groups on messaging platforms. These “panel owners” are tasked with ensuring that the virtual games hosted by the app’s platforms are rigged in favor of the house. Despite initial user profits, addiction often leads to significant financial losses.

The app first came under law enforcement’s scrutiny when Abhishek Pallav, SP of Durg, apprehended individuals connected to the illegal betting app and initiated FIRs. Investigations soon revealed the identities of the masterminds, Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, who played pivotal roles in the operation. Several bank passbooks seized from those arrested unveiled a complex financial web used to launder illegal betting funds.

What propelled Bollywood celebrities into the spotlight was a viral video showcasing Saurabh Chandrakar’s lavish wedding in the UAE, where an astonishing Rs 200 crore was reportedly expended at a luxurious seven-star Dubai hotel. Private jets ferried family members from Nagpur to the UAE. Notably, the event featured performances by several celebrities who also promoted the Mahadev app.

Reports suggest that these stars were allegedly compensated Rs 40 crore by the promoters of the betting platform, with hawala channels facilitating cash payments. Ranbir Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Kapil Sharma, Huma Qureshi, and Hina Khan have all received summons to appear at the ED office in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

In a significant breakthrough last month, the ED seized a whopping Rs 417 crore during searches conducted in Kolkata, Bhopal, and Mumbai related to the Mahadev betting app case.

Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, the masterminds behind the Mahadev betting app scam, began as juice and tire shop owners in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. Both individuals had a history of gambling addictions.

Their lives took a dramatic turn when they traveled to Dubai with their life savings, where they encountered a sheikh and a Pakistani national who assisted them in establishing the Mahadev Online Betting App. The ED has now issued non-bailable warrants and lookout circulars against the duo, marking a stunning fall from grace for these former juice sellers who turned into billionaires.

In a tale filled with twists and turns, the mahadev betting app scam continues to unravel, with Bollywood’s involvement adding an extra layer of intrigue to this gripping saga of crime, money, and fame.
